To become a CSSA, you must have the CSA certification as a prerequisite, and pass the CSSA exam. To prepare for the exam, you can enroll in the Senior System Architect Self Study or Instructor-Led Training course on Pega Academy™.
Certified Lead System Architect (CLSA) Questions
How do I become a Certified Lead System Architect (CLSA)?
To become a CLSA, a candidate must:
Be a Certified Senior System Architect (CSSA) in good standing and have the CSSA certification reflected in their Pega Transcript on the Pega Discovery Network (PDN).
Pass the Certified Lead System Architect Part 1 exam (administered by Pearson VUE) with a score of 70% or above.
Pass the CLSA Part 2 exam (Application Build administered by Pegasystems) within six (6) months of passing the Part 1 exam.
You must pass both Part 1 and 2 exams to earn CLSA certification.

To prepare for the CLSA exams, you can either enroll in the CLSA Self Study program on Pega Academy™ or the CLSA Immersion instructor-led course. The CLSA Immersion course is a six-week class. Normally, students set aside additional time immediately after this course to study and take both exams. There is also an additional CLSA Part 2 Exam Preparation session available through Pega Academy™.
How does the CLSA Part 2 Exam work?
The Part 2 exam tests your ability to create a PRPC application based on a requirements document which describes what you must build in a local PRPC instance. You are also expected to answer a series of design questions using a template which we also provide to you. At the end of the exam, you will build and send a migration package containing your application. We will migrate this to a PVS instance which is used for evaluation.
There are two options for taking the Part 2 exam:
Build one large application within 7 consecutive days to create an application based on a given scenario. You must achieve a score of over 70% in order to pass the exam.
Build 3 phases of a large application spaced over several periods (3 days, 2 days, 2 days). Each phase concentrates on a selected areas of PRPC. You must achieve an average score of over 70% for all 3 phases in order to pass the exam.
What version of PRPC do I use to complete the CLSA Part 2 Exam?
You must complete the exam using PRPC version 7.1.9. It is highly recommended to use the PVS system available as a download in the 7.1 CLSA Self Study course to complete the exam.
Can you provide more detail about Option 2 for the CLSA Part 2 Exam?
Option 2 for the CLSA exam gives more flexibility for the exam candidate by allowing the candidate to complete the exam in separate parts. It consists of constructing 3 phases of a large application spaced over several periods (3 days, 2 days, 2 days). Each phase concentrates on selected areas of PRPC:
Phase 1 – Enterprise class Structure; Case Design; Data Model, Business Policies
Phase 2 – Integration, Case Design
Phase 3 – User Experience; Security, Performance, Reporting
Each phase has their own scenario and they are completely independent of each other as code created in Phase 1 is not carried over to later phases. The starting point for Phase 1 will be a blank PRPC development environment. A starting point is provided for Phases 2 and 3.
Each phase is graded separately. You must achieve an average score of over 70% in order to pass the exam and ALL phases must be above 65%. If you fail one phase of the exam, you must retake the entire exam using a different scenario. The 3 phases must be completed within 6 weeks of starting.
How do I register for the CLSA Part 2 Application Build?
Once you have passed your CLSA Part 1 exam, contact ImmersionLeadershipTeam@pega.com to schedule and pay for your Part 2 exam.
What happens if I pass my CLSA Part 1 but do not take my Application Build within six (6) months?
After six (6) months, your eligibility to sit for the Application Build will expire and you will be required to sit for your Part 1 exam again. If you completed the Part 1 exam prior to June 1, 2016 you have up to November 31, 2016 to attempt the Part 2 exam.
What happens if I do not pass my Application Build on the first attempt?
If you fail the Part 2 Application Build you must retake Part 2 within three (3) months of receiving your failing grade or you will have to sit for the Part 1 exam again.
What does it cost to get CLSA certified?
The CLSA Part 1 exam, taken through Pearson VUE, costs $150.00 USD.
The CLSA Part 2 Application Build costs $1,000.00 USD. ($750 if taken before September 30, 2016.)
Subsequent Part 2 Application Build attempts are $1,000.00 USD.

Exam Retake Rule:
You must wait at least 3 calendar days after your first attempt to take the exam again. Third attempts must wait at least 14 calendar days after the second attempt.
Each exam may be taken for a total of 3 times in a 12 month period. The 12 month period starts from the date the first exam is taken. For example, if the first exam is taken on May 1, 2014, a candidate may take the same exam 2 more times before May 1, 2015.
You must pay the full exam fee each time you take the exam.
