FINDING THE NAIL TECH SCHOOL THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU
Nail Tech School That Is Right for YouSince everyone learns at a different rate and with different styles, in order to be successful, it is going to be imperative that an individual looking to become a nail technician finds a school that will teach them according to their style.
It will require a little bit of work on the part of the individual looking for the training, but in the long run, it will be beneficial.
The first step that an individual looking for a nail tech school should do is search for beauty or nail tech schools that are in their area. They should request information from the schools they find.
Once an admissions representative contacts them, they should be ready with a series of questions to ask the admissions representative. Examples of questions that students looking for schools can ask are the following:
Is your school accredited?
What is the tuition cost, and do they include books and supplies needed for the course?
Can I tour the school?
What is the school’s policy on leave of absences and absenteeism?
Does your school solely offer nail tech courses, or do they also offer comprehensive cosmetology, aesthetics, and makeup courses?
What are the class schedules? Are classes available in the evening and on weekends? Do students have the option of attending part-time or is full-time the only option?
What is the duration of the course I am considering?
What are the skills and techniques that are taught through this course?
How many students are in each class?
What percentage of students graduate from your program, and how many of them find employment?
Are there job placement services available?
After asking these questions, students should consider other things. For example, they should think of the proximity of the school to their home or job. It is also a good idea to look into financial aid. Prospective nail school students should not be afraid to ask questions, and then ask more questions.
It is important for students to feel comfortable with the manicurist school that they are going to attend prior to choosing to attend it. This is the only way that they are going to be able to guarantee that they will get the most out of their tuition dollars and walk away understanding the subjects that they are learning.
NAIL TECHNICIAN SCHOOLS ONLINE
Individuals who are looking to become nail technicians, but who have busy schedules, are interested in learning about nail tech schools online. Some wonder, can I attend a nail tech school online and still qualify to take the board exams?
How much should I expect to pay for online nail technician training? Will the training I received require me to do an internship? How will I engage in hands-on training? All of these questions are extremely important, and the answer to each question is going to vary depending on the circumstances in which a student is looking to get their nail technician certification.
The state where an individual is looking to get board certified is going to play a part in answering some of the above mentioned questions. Every single state in the United States requires that the vast majority or all of the training hours happen in the classroom.
The reason for this is because a lot of the skills connected to being a nail tech require hands-on training. Students will be shown how to carry out a procedure, they will carry out the procedure, receive instructions and then repeat the process again. However, there are many schools that are offering parts of their nail courses online.
Nail technician schools online focus on teaching students theory. They cover aspects of becoming a nail technician that do not require hands-on work.
There are several organizations that offer nail technician certification online or online nail art school. Individuals who are interested in nail technician schools online may want to look at specialty schools, such as the MediNail Learning Center, which offers a specialized online certification program designed for individuals who wish to work in the medical field as a medical nail technician.
These individuals may work with a podiatrist in a medical spa. To find out more information about online nail technician courses check out this page.

Beach-Side Nail Salon Makes a Splash

Stay Polished Nail Boutique, a nails-only salon, retains customers with personalized hour-long treatments and perfected product application systems. By staying current with the latest gel-polish trends, the salon preserves its status as a “go-to” salon in La Jolla, Calif.

Nestled between the cliffs of Bird Rock, a quaint beach-side neighborhood in La Jolla, Calif., Stay Polished Nail Boutique has a simple motto: great service, great hand and foot massages, and perfectly polished nails.
Salon owner Naomi Kim-Nelson left a 14-year-long career in healthcare to become a nail tech. At the start of her career, she worked in a small La Jolla salon, and after a few years she noticed ways in which the current nail scene could be improved. In 2008, with the opening of Stay Polished, Kim-Nelson brought her ideas to fruition.

“Coming from a healthcare background, I am kind of nitpicky when it comes to cleanliness and customer service,” says Kim-Nelson. “You go to a salon to feel relaxed, so you want your time there to be leisurely. Nothing should be upsold on you, and if you want extra callus work, special polish, or a particular scrub, it shouldn’t cost extra.”
Matching the unhurried atmosphere of the area, all treatments at Stay Polished are one-hour long and ensure customers a personalized leisurely experience. Clients can choose which portion of the treatment they’d like their manicurist to focus on. Whether it’s a longer relaxation massage or more nail repair, the service is wholly in the hands of the client.
Long treatments are just as therapeutic for the nail tech as they are for the client, says Kim-Nelson, who sees clients in addition to running the salon. “Sometimes I don’t like to be rushed because it takes a certain amount of time to make the nails look good, to do something you’re proud of. An hour is adequate and if you end earlier, that’s fine; at least you’re not making someone else wait. You’re upfront about expectations.”
Additionally, the salon vows to steer clear of electric files, acrylics, and bad odors, and works hard to stay abreast of all the latest natural nail products on the market.

Customers Are Here to Stay
Since Bird Rock is a bit off the grid, especially compared to nearby areas like downtown La Jolla or San Diego, Stay Polished does not receive many tourists. On occasion, a university student or two will book a service before graduation, but the salon’s client base is mostly returning customers, many of whom Kim-Nelson acquired from her previous nail tech job.
Stay Polished therefore puts a lot of effort into customer retention. Nail techs keep a record for each client, tracking both personal details and beauty preferences. Currently the salon has about 1,000 clients in its database, which includes regular and once-a-year customers.

“Our clients love the fact that we remember everything from the colors they most often select to their last vacation,” says Kim-Nelson. “We know what they had done previously, and if there was a certain top coat or polish brand that worked better for them.”
At Stay Polished, clients are served wine, champagne, beer, tea, or coffee free of charge. If Kim-Nelson knows a client has a particular beverage she likes to drink, she’ll keep it in stock. “We really get to know our customers personally, and they almost become our friends,” says Kim-Nelson. “Making them feel like they’re at home makes them more relaxed.”

Customization Is Key
Stay Polished’s basic manicures are $25 and the salon’s popular Bio Sculpture manicures are $45. Although the prices are set, the service is not.
A Bio Sculpture manicure, for example, includes nail prep, cuticle work, nail shaping, nail cleaning, hand massaging, polishing, and curing. However, the nail techs try to customize the procedure to better fit their client’s needs.
“We cater to the individual, so if we see he or she needs extra cuticle work, we do that,” Kim-Nelson says. “Or if they want more buffing, we do that too. It’s the same price, but we gear it toward making it specialized in that allotted hour.”
According to Kim-Nelson, Bio Sculpture is very prevalent at Stay Polished due to its versatility.
“Not only can you give someone a safe soak-off gel manicure, you can also fix or extend a nail with Bio Sculpture, and it comes in over 180 colors,” says Kim-Nelson. “They have different gels with different degrees of flexibility, strength, and hardness so you can really custom-build your service to that client. You can even do 3-D nails.”
Kim-Nelson is so confident in the product and her salon’s mastery of its application that she offers her clients a two-week guarantee: If any lifting or peeling occurs in that time, the next appointment is free.
“We have that guarantee because we feel like the prep work is the main thing that will prevent our customers from coming back with complaints,” says Kim-Nelson. “We don’t do any soaking in water. We just do extensive nail prepping, making sure the plate is completely clean and free of foreign substances that will touch the gel.”

Trying New Things
Kim-Nelson is not afraid to try a new product and have her salon be the first in the area to offer it. When Kim-Nelson or her nail techs are interested in a new product, they will spend a few weeks familiarizing themselves with it, testing out its application internally. If they’re pleased, they’ll add it to the salon’s evolving menu.
“If our customers find another salon that offers the same product we do, they might love the product, but they don’t love the application,” says Kim-Nelson. “When they find out how long we’ve been dealing with these new products behind the scenes, they’ll stay with us because they know we’ve already perfected it.”
Currently, Stay Polished offers Bio Sculpture soak-off gels, Gelish, Minx, CND, OPI, Essie, Carolyn New York, Chanel polish, bamboo and lemongrass scrubs and lotions from Lather, and Footlogix products. In addition to gel and regular polish, they also offer 3-D nail art, color blocking, and 2-D nail design.
Kim-Nelson also reports that glitter is extremely popular among clients at the moment. Rather than using typical glitters, the salon uses Eye Candy glitter eye shadow, which they discovered works well on nails and gives clients a more sophisticated look.
The salon’s fearless attitude toward trying new things, in addition to its customized services, is what has brought such a local crowd to this intimate Bird Rock shop.

Woman May Have Contracted HIV from Manicure: Should You Be Worried?

Could a single trip to the nail salon change your life forever? (Kenneth WillardtTrunk Archive)
For most women, the worst thing that’s happened at a nail salon is that they’ve chosen a polish color they end up regretting — or maybe they’ve had their nails clipped a little too close. But for one 22-year-old woman in Brazil a manicure turned potentially deadly: Getting her nails done may have given her HIV.
: Potentially Harmful Nail Polish Ingredient Found in Women’s Bodies
The young woman, whose case is detailed in the journal AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses, was recently diagnosed with advanced HIV yet failed to meet any of the standard conditions for transmission — she’d never had sex, a blood transfusion or surgery, or gotten a piercing or tattoo.
Doctors were befuddled as to how she had contracted the virus.
After confirming her claims, her doctors dug deeper, searching for any incident that could have infected her. The only possibility: The patient recalled sharing manicure instruments 10 years prior with her cousin, a manicurist who was later diagnosed with HIV. Detailed analyses revealed that the two women were, in fact, infected with highly similar strains of the virus, leading the researchers to conclude that manicure instruments are potential routes of HIV transmission.
Although most of us aren’t sharing cuticle scissors with an HIV-infected friend, the majority of women — and a number of men — have probably gotten a manicure at a nail salon, where instruments are regularly reused. Disinfection standards vary from state to state, although most include these steps, according to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA): Wash the instruments in soap and water, soak them in a disinfectant for 10 to 30 minutes, rinse the tools in clean water and dry them with a clean cloth, then store them in a clean, covered area.
: Hundreds of Kids Harmed by Detergent “Pods”: Study
The problem is, there are more than 48,000 nail salons in the United States, according to industry publication Nails Magazine, and we can’t possibly know what’s happening in the back room of every salon, although state inspections are supposed to catch any violations. But that may not be happening as often as it should be: New York, for example, has 27 inspectors. This small group of officials is responsible for reviewing all of the state’s salons, including the vast number in New York City alone, according to a recent report. Over a four-year period, 19 percent of the state’s salons were cited for sanitary violations.
In addition, “Salons come under the department of cosmetology, not the department of health. So they don’t have the same rigidity for inspection,” said Dr. David A. Johnson, a professor of medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Nationwide, the problem may be even greater than the New York numbers suggest. Dr. Robert Spalding, a podiatrist and author of Death by Pedicure: The Dirty Secrets of Nail Salons, estimates that 75 percent of U.S. nail salons don’t follow state guidelines for disinfection of instruments. And even if they do comply, the requirements may not be stringent enough. “The states don’t require nail salons to sterilize their instruments,” Spalding told Yahoo Health. “They only require them to do basic disinfection.”
: Nail Salon Workers Face Health Risks — And They’re Not The Only Ones
Those jars of blue liquid you see on salon counters contain the disinfecting agent — and it’s only effective when used correctly 100 percent of the time. “If they don’t change the [disinfecting agent] on a daily basis, if they don’t soak the instrument for 10 minutes, and if they don’t hand-clean it before they soak it, none of that stuff works,” he said.
Does failure to properly disinfect actually translate to an increased risk of infection? Maybe. It doesn’t take much to damage the delicate skin around your nails, creating what Spalding calls “salon microtraumas,” which act as points of entry for viruses or bacteria. “You can break the skin and inoculate somebody without drawing blood,” he said, which is why nail techs aren’t supposed to perform “aggressive” treatments, like digging out ingrown toenails.

“If you’ve ever used a nail file, and it starts to burn, that’s all it takes to break the skin,” Spalding said. Similarly, if your nail tech damages the hyponychium — the seal that holds the nail to the nail bed — while cleaning underneath your nails, you may not bleed, but the barrier has still been broken, potentially allowing infectious agents lingering on contaminated instruments to enter, he said.
“The manicurist uses a cuticle scissor or buffer. They get a little bit of microscopic blood on it that stays on the device, and then it maybe just gets put in a cleaning solution,” Johnson told Yahoo Health. “That doesn’t really get the particle off — the viral or bacterial infectious agent is still there. Then the tool gets reused, and somebody with disruption of the membrane has contact with the [infectious agent].”
There have been verified cases of hepatitis infection in nail salons, prompting the American College of Gastroenterology to call for research in this area. (In fact, one of Johnson’s family members contracted hepatitis C after getting a manicure.) But the HIV case in Brazil seems to be the first of its kind. OSHA, however, has long cautioned nail techs that exposure to HIV is a risk to be aware of.
So could HIV transmission happen in nail salons stateside? “It’s possible. Any sharp instrument could theoretically carry this risk,” said Dr. Ronald Hershow, an infectious disease expert at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, who has studied HIV in women. In fact, according to the study authors of the infected woman’s case analysis, tattooing, acupuncture, and piercings are recognized as potential modes of transmission.
For manicures, “they use metal instruments and files, and there might be blood or blood-derived body fluids, like the oozy material that comes out of a skin lesion. If you’re filing a cuticle and get a little blood on the file, then use it on a person, there would be some risk, yes,” Hershow told Yahoo Health.
However, that risk is probably “negligible,” he said, based on data about HIV transmission through needles and scalpels in health-care settings. If a nurse accidentally sticks herself with a needle used to draw blood from an HIV-infected patient, “the risk [of transmission] is not that high — one in 300,” Hershow said. “Scalpel injuries are thought to have an even lower risk.” In other words, even if your nail tech is using dirty tools, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll walk out with an infection, however disgusting the thought is.
: Why You Should Never Touch a Receipt With Clean Hands
Even so, it’s smart to protect yourself at the nail salon, since you don’t know who’s been there before you, how thoroughly the techs disinfect their tools, or whether you’ve endured microtraumas to your skin. Before booking an appointment, Spalding suggests asking your salon these questions:
Do you follow state standards for using a liquid disinfectant or an autoclave to sterilize instruments? Only one state, Texas, requires salons to sanitize their instruments through with autoclaves, a technique that uses pressurized steam (which is also the way hospitals sanitize equipment used on Ebola patients). If you can find a salon that has invested in a true autoclave — not a rice cooker or a baby-bottle steamer stand-in, said Spalding — you’re in luck: “Autoclaving works every time,” he said, whereas blue-liquid disinfection is more subject to human error.
That said, if your salon uses “high-level disinfection,” you should still be safe. “This means it meets the criteria to kill things like tuberculosis, HIV, or hepatitis,” said Johnson. “It requires a two-step process: One is mechanical cleaning, like a brush, followed by a high-level disinfectant.”
Do you use razorblades to cut calluses? Safe salons don’t offer services like this.
Do you wear gloves? OSHA advises that salon techs wear gloves when doing manis or pedis — and then toss them immediately after use.
Have your nail techs received advanced training? Nearly half of salon techs have participated in online continuing education in the last year, according to a survey by Nails Magazine. Fifty-nine percent have taken a class at a trade show. These are the techs you want. The best bet: Ask if your tech has taken one of Spalding’s courses at MediNailm, the only program in the country that teach techs about microtraumas and related health issues.
If you’re really concerned, Johnson suggests bringing your own manicure equipment with you (although this isn’t allowed in all states, noted Spalding). Then after your appointment, do your part: Fill out a safety survey about your salon at SafeSalonRatingm (Or download the app.) to help Spalding create a database of health-conscious salons.

Help!!! Serious pain after pedicure ugh

Unfortunately, I don't think there is anything anyone can tell you that will make it better other than going to an ERurgent care type setting (mind you this is coming from a health care professional).
It sounds to be a very infected ingrown toe nail. If after you soaked it in Epsom salts and tried to cut the nail out, you didn't succeed, the odds are a professional needs to take it out.
I am uncomfortable that your nail tech is trying to "correct" your problem. There are multiple varying factors here:
1) If your tech made an open wound and the foot bath wasn't clean to begin with
2) Most NSS (non standard salons) do not practice standard hygiene for sterilizing their tools. If a tool was used to cut skin that was not properly sanitized...
3) Your nail tech should probably not take it upon herself to correct your deeply ingrown toe nail, especially if you are not familiar with the process. It is a completely different story if the hangover nail is not down near the quick.
If you do end up going to an ER, which I suggest, you do need to take your bill to the salon, provided your toe was not in this state when you walked in for your pedicure.

Nail salon with a mission: Heavenly Sets & Boutique hopes to be about more than aesthetics

Heavenly Sets & Boutique is a new salon in Hamilton decorated with angel wings.
Owner Carol Durbin said the business is more of a refuge.
“I wanted something where ladies could come and sit and relax and let the weight of the world fall off their shoulders,” Durbin said. “It is a place where men, women and children can come and feel like they have entered ‘our little piece of Heaven.’ What is said in the salon stays in the salon. If you want to have a meltdown, then have a meltdown. We won’t charge you extra for it.”

Durbin works with nail technician Therease Rinehart.
“We are both Christians,” Durbin said. “I was led to this place by God and he opened the door. In my mind, God is the owner and I’m the manager.”
Heavenly Sets currently offers manicures, pedicures, artificial enhancements (acrylic overlays) with or without nail art and shellacs. They offer paraffin wax dip for hands and feet.
“We do promote natural nail growth with ‘nail tiques,’” Durbin said. “It’s for ladies who don’t want colored polish but want something clear that helps their nails to grow with the extra protein.”
Durbin and Rinehart said they are experimenting with cutting-edge techniques and new systems on the market, like aqua nails.
“They are like water globes with little items inside that float,” Rinehart said. “There are different things that in the nail industry are a little bit edgier and a little bit different.”
Rinehart said she has always wanted to be a nail technician but had a 20-year career in the health care industry first.
“Due to my own health conditions I took a year off from a stressful job and went to school to become a nail tech,” Rinehart said. “It was my high school girl dream that I never thought I would get to do. I got my certification and here I am.”
Durbin worked in the industry for six years, 1998 to 2004. Her life took many detours and she is back with a career she loves.
“I decided I needed to be happy and stress free,” Durbin said. “I decided I wanted my own place and here we are.”
Durbin called renting the building on Pinckney “a God thing.” She was doing her banking across the street at First Security when she saw the building she felt was perfect. She inquired about it the day the “for rent” sign was to be placed in the window. The store required some repainting, refurbishing and refurnishing. Each piece of furniture, including one of the pedicure-massage chairs, has a story. Curtains, for client privacy, can separate the stations.
Rinehart said she loves to get and give a good pedicure.
The duo provides service for people with medical needs or disabilities that have trouble trimming their own toenails. The business does have required limitations.

“Pedicures aren’t always given just for aesthetics but also for physical needs,” she said. “We don’t want to be a salon just for beauty but we want to be there for other needs too. Everybody’s got a story and we’re here to meet physical and emotional needs.”
Durbin said her clients become family.
“A lot of clients give me a hug when they are done,” she said. “I know I’ve made an impact on them. They feel comfortable coming here and know they can let their hair down and receive confidentiality. They are special people.”
Rinehart said their goal is to create a peaceful retreat.

“We have been blessed,” she said.
Heavenly Sets & Boutique wants to give back to the community. The duo said they each have lost family members and special friends to cancer and suicide. They want people to submit situation stories on and they will give a service to the individuals in need.
“We want them to have time to unwind and take a break from life a little bit,” Durbin said.
The duo will also do awareness efforts. Get a nail polish in the color of that cause and they will donate to the cause.
“It’s not a lot, but pennies do add up,” Durbin said. “We want to give back.”
Heavenly Sets & Boutique offers gift certificates. Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but they will also accommodate busy schedules by opening evenings and Saturdays by appointment. The boutique aspect of the business has handcrafted items like jewelry, pottery and a little bit of retail.
“A lot of the items have come from the West Fork Gallery and Bead Shop and the work of my mother-in-law, Gay Findley, and her ladies there,” Durbin said. “It is building.”
Rinehart said they maintain a “very tidy” business.
“All of the chairs are plumb-free pedicure chairs which mean that there is no chance of bacteria transferring,” she said. “All our pumice stones and equipment are soaked in anti-bacterial chemicals. Everything else is thrown away so bacteria are not transferred, which is super-important. It keeps all of our customers protected.”
Rinehart also helps the community look their best for formal occasions. She has operated Bitterroot Black Tie tuxedo rental for three and a half years from her home. Heavenly Sets is now the base of operation but Rinehart will go to remote locations such as the bride’s home or a school.
Heavenly Sets & Boutique is located at 100 Pinckney Street, on the corner of Highway 93 and Pinckney in Hamilton. To make an appointment, contact Durbin and Rinehart at 406-375-5555.

TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! LOCAL 42 RETALIATES AGAINST MAST SUPPORTER DURING CITY HALL HOSTILE TAKEOVER!!!

It has been a big week for Kansas City Healthcare . . . Without question recent developments regarding ambulance service in this cowtown demonstrate that politics and power grabs take precedence over protecting the lives of residents.
First, let's take care of business . . . Yesterday Council Lady Cindy "Dimwit" Circo tried to put to rest rumors that Local 42 and her Local 42 husband run her vote right before she pretty much did their bidding and helped to push through a MAST takeover move.
I can only hope that Kansas City's most powerful nail tech will at least mention my site by name when pleading with people "don't believe the blogs" because I've got a great many stories regarding her incompetence and a name check would be a nice favor since she's obviously a loyal reader.
Now . . . Onto more important recent developments . . .
LAST NIGHT LOCAL 42 RETALIATED AGAINST AN ADVOCATE WORKING TO SAVE MAST!!!
Citizens to Save Mast was recently declared a rival organization at the union meeting and the leader of the movement Lesa Gonzalez could face internal union charges.
Union backlash isn't much of a surprise but I think this instance is noteworthy because it betrays an earlier promise to Local 42 members signed by their leadership. Here's what they wrote in March.

"During the period prior to integration, Local 42 is committed to working with the leadership of MAST in as productive a manner as possible.
Finally, contrary to the "rumor mill", every member of the Local 42's Bargaining Unit will be fairly and equally represented. While we would prefer that all members publicly and privately support the decisions and direction democratically determined by the membership, we recognize that all members have a right to their individual opinions, even when such opinions are in the minority. As such, we assure you that repercussions andor retaliation will not be targeted or tolerated against any member for expressing his or her personal opinion."
Once again . . .
IT'S NO BIG SURPRISE BUT LOCAL 42 LEADERSHIP LIED!!!
And here's the real talk . . .
It's a fact that this whole MAST HOSTILE TAKEOVER HOT MESS came about because of a backroom Union Bargaining deal.
Local 42 leadership and their cronies are the only people in Kansas City who think a City Takeover is a good idea . . . Because EVERYONE knows a promise to keep MAST out of the Fire Department is worthless from a group that can't even keep their word to their own members.
And Kansas City residents don't trust City Hall to run anything . . .
So The City Council and The Mayor pushing this through only makes sense because special interest groups run this town.
There is a bright side . . . This issue is bringing a spotlight to local leadership incompetence, Local 42 rank-and-file aren't coming out en mass to support the hostile takeover because I can only hope so many can see an obvious instance of dirty pool. Finally, residents are once again demonstrating little confidence in politics as usual.
Nevertheless . . . The hostile takeover is moving forward and it's just a bit disappointing to see KC politicos essentially powerless against Union Bosses and special interests who are more than eager to pull the plug on anybody who opposes their power grab.
